The County Commissioner or Sheriff races get more attention, and while those races are indeed important, the voters need to not sacrifice the opportunity to reform the office of the Clerk of Superior Court. Contrary to what the WDN would have you think that office is in great need of reform.

The Beaufort County Jail Construction Committee met on October 3 at 4:00 PM in the commissioners meeting room on West Third Street. Members present were Al Klemm, Jerry Langley, Robert Belcher and Ed Henry.

Officials in Beaufort County passed a new ordinance that prohibits smoking and the use of other tobacco products and e-cigarettes in County buildings, vehicles and within fifty feet of all County buildings, beginning October 1, 2013.

The jail situation continues to be a thorn in the side of Beaufort County tax payers. It appears construction of a new jail will cause as much as a 10 percent increase in property taxes.

Midgette was then escorted to an office beside the courtroom by a Bailiff and Detention Officer to be prepped for transport. Midgette had been out on bond prior to court and was wearing civilian clothing. Midgette fled on foot before officers were able to apply restraints.

Pitt County was established in 1760 after a legislative act to annex Beaufort County. Named after William Pitt, a British statesman who supported the colonist's cause for freedom, the county was formed because of the need for a regional courthouse and prison.
